How to Add an Assignment in Moodle
Moodle has an assignment feature in the activity chooser where teachers can manage the assignment submission types, feedback types and provide detailed descriptions about the assignment. In the assignment set up screen, you can type in the name of the assignment next to ‘Assignment name’ and type in the description next to the text box for ‘Description’ tab. The following highlighted icons allows you to add media links,images,audio/video files, and H5P content.
In the availability section, there are several options of dates and times to make this assignment available to students or to place a reminder for grading. The options are the following:
Allow submissions from:
This is the date when students can submit their assignment if this option is enabled. If this is disabled, students can submit their assignment any time when this assignment is uploaded and visible to the students.
Due to date:
This is the date when students can submit their assignments without any signs of late mark appearing on their submission page.
Cut off date:
This is the last date that the students can submit their assignment with a late submission sign showing up on their submission page. If a cut off date is enabled, students cannot submit their assignment after this date.Remind me to grade by:
This is the date when the teachers should complete grading the assignment that the students had submitted. In submission types, there are two options for how students can submit their assignment. You can enable the following two options of submission types by checking the box next to each options.
Online text:
This option allows students to type in the text editor. You can also set a word limit to display warning when the students exceeded the word limit that you placed.File submissions:
This option enables teachers to specify the maximum number of file that the students can upload for this assignment and the maximum submission size for each file. The teacher can also specify the type of files that can be accepted for submission by clicking the choose button next to accepted file types. In feedback types, there are three options for how the students can receive feedback for their assignment submissions. These are the three following options.
Feedback comments:
This option allows teachers to leave feedback comments to the students’ assignment submission. When you enable this option, you can enable comment in line to comment directly on an ‘online text’ type submission.
Offline grading comments:
This option allows teachers to download, upload and edit the student grades in a program such as MS Excel. When the teacher completes grading the assignment, they can upload the student grades in Excel spreadsheet. The comments will be transferred over into Moodle’s gradebook
Feedback files:
This option allows teachers to upload files with feedback when they grade the assignments. The feedback files can be either just the documents with comments or spoken audio feedback. In submission setting, teachers can manage setting for how many times that the students will be allowed to submit the assignment and whether to require students to accept the submission statement. These are the following three options.
Require students to click the submit button:
If you set this option as No, then the students can make changes to their submission at any time. Every time the students make alterations or add/remove files from their assignment submission, the submit button will not appear. If you set this option as Yes, then the submit button will appear. The students will have to click that button to submit their assignments. Before the students are ready to click the submit button, they can upload their assignment drafts. After the students click this button, they can no longer edit their assignment and, they must ask the teacher to revert their submitted assignment to the draft status if they were to make any changes.
Require that students accept the submission statement:
When you enable this option, it will require students to agree that they put in their original work before they can submit their assignments. If the administrator has given the teachers the option to use the submission statement, then it will be available in the assignment settings screen. If the administrator has forced this statement throughout the site, a teacher will not have this option in the settings, but a student will see this statement when accessing their assignment.Attempts reopened:
If you enable ‘ require students to click submit’, then the students will only be able to submit the assignment once. By changing this option to ‘Manually’, students can resubmit their assignments. You can also change it to ‘ Automatically until pass’ so that the students can keep resubmitting the assignments until they get a passing grade. Now we have learned how to add an assignment on the Moodle course page!
